The South (Band 3)

Vertex Law services a diverse client base of both lenders and borrowers across a range of matters including refinancings and property-backed lending. Recent work highlights include advising Santander on its provision of around £8 million worth of loan and invoice finance facilities to MTS Cleansing and Composting Facilities Services. Other major clients include Pavilion Property Group, Close Property Finance and NatWest.

Despite challenging economic conditions, the team remains busy advising on refinancings, seller-backed MBOs and a number of distressed transactions. It continues to be a popular choice amongst clients, especially for deals in the healthcare and food industries. Its client roster includes Brake Bros, Paydens Group and Day Lewis Group.

James Beatton and 'pedigree lawyer' Trevor Carney recently advised Charlton Athletic FC on the MBO of Charlton Athletic Football Company, Charlton Athletic Holdings and Charlton Athletic. Interviewees admire it for 'avoiding a timber-lined, fusty old law firm approach,' and appreciate its open manner towards building relationships. Notable clients include card payment system developer Commidea and Planit Holdings, a supplier of kitchen and bathroom design software. 

Key individuals
Irfan Baluch focuses on the commercialisation of IP rights for clients in the technology and media sectors. Clients say his style is 'calm, placid and gentlemanly,' yet add that 'his legs are working like billy-o below the surface.' Pete Kenyon is much admired by clients for combining tactical nous with a relaxed style. They also approve that he is 'extremely switched on to the commercial realities.'



REAL ESTATE

The South: Kent, Sussex & Surrey (Band 4)

This West Malling firm's real estate team focuses on key industry sectors: education, secured lending and healthcare. The team comprises two partners and six fee earners. One recent work highlight is the team's recent advice to Biossence on an option to purchase land forming part of Ayleford Paper Mills. The practice also handled various securities instructions for Close Property Finance. The group counts among its clients Canterbury Christ Church University, Finnforest UK and Day Lewis. 



RESTRUCTURING/INSOLVENCY

This Kent-based team advises insolvency practitioners, companies and directors on a variety of insolvency and restructuring matters. Clients include Bridge Business Recovery, CCW Recovery Solutions and Harris Lipman.
