Working with The Caldecott Foundation

As part of its ongoing CSR policy and commitment to the local community, Vertex Law made The Caldecott Foundation its chosen charity to support during 2012 and 2013.

Based in Smeeth, near Ashford, the foundation cares for some of the most vulnerable children in the UK. Many of the children have suffered neglect, abuse and multiple breakdowns within the family setting, foster care and education.

Vertex Law’s Hazel Dermody explains, “We wanted to get everyone involved in choosing our charity, so after talking to several worthy causes, the staff took a vote. It resulted in a landslide for The Caldecott Foundation. We hope to get involved in as many fundraising activities as we can during 2010 and 2011. Knowing that our employees are committed to the charity will help us to raise as much as possible for this great cause.”

Footsore lawyers trek for 18 miles

A team of four took part in a sponsored walk along the North Downs in aid of the foundation. The 18 mile hike took them from Wye to Capel-le-Ferne.

Vertex Law’s marketing manager, Hazel Dermody, explains, “It was a challenging walk but the weather was good, the views were breathtaking and we all completed it successfully. There were a few steep hills which were tough, but it was all in a good cause and very worthwhile. We raised in excess of £750.”

Walking with Hazel were lawyers James Beatton, Katie Gotterson and Gemma Brown. Accompanying them were Katie and Gemma’s partners, respectively Rob Haylock and Mark Mintram.

Law with a brush

The Caldecott Foundation now have an activity room for the kids to relax in, thanks to Vertex Law. The team from Vertex spent part of their weekend refurbishing a room at Hornbeam House, the Caldecott Foundation's headquarters.

The team consisted of Hazel Dermody, Janine Filmer, Jo Owen and her mother Jane, Katie Jones and Caroline Young, as well as Hazel’s fiancé Neil Pettitt and his parents, Kay and David.

“It was a great team and we did well to convert the room in just one day,” said Hazel. “We even had the help of one of the children. We hope they will enjoy using the room. It was a pleasure to help out and we're planning to do more for the foundation in the near future.”
