by Abbe WestHealth Secretary Alan Johnson has commissioned the independent Review of NHS Dentistry in England to be published in the spring. This will address the issues raised in the Health Select Committee 2008 report on dentistry which called for the reconsideration of the new NHS dental contract introduced in England on 1st April 2006. The BDA's formal response to that report sought an assessment of what is required to enable NHS dentistry to meet the aspirations of the NHS Next Stage Review. [more]

Looking forward to April 2009 and the end of the Guaranteed Income Period
by Abbe WestAt introduction in April 2006, 11% of dentists chose not to take out the new GDS contract. This was in spite of the guarantee given to dentists that their pattern of service and remuneration would not be altered for 3 years. We are now facing the end of that period and a survey carried out by the Dental Practitioners’ Association in May 2008 reported that 26% of those surveyed did not intend to continue providing NHS dentistry treatment after April 2009 when the guaranteed period ends.
